Being part of the supporting cast isn't all that bad. Just ask Neil Patrick Harris, better known as womanizing Altrucell employee, Barney Stinson, on CBS' How I Met Your Mother. According to Harris, he did not have any problem signing up for the supporting role.

"[In] the pilot, he got straight-razor shaved and went laser tagging and smoked cigars and he's very boisterous and outgoing and with catch phrases all over the place from the get-go. So I think he was kind of the Fonzie guy in the pilot," Harris told the Deseret Morning News. "I love it. It's great… A supporting role on this gives you a life. You're not working every day and every scene all the time and feeling beat up about it. We have a really nice work schedule."

Neil Patrick Harris knows he has come a long way from playing a teenage doctor on Doogie Howser, M.D., and is constantly reminded when eager fans of How I Met Your Mother approach him.

“It was weird growing in the business from my early days," Neil Patrick Harris said. "People sort of looked and sort of pointed and sort of acknowledged that I was this little kid actor.

"And now I'm grown up and people come and actually talk about specifics of the show — their favorite episode. 'When are you going to get slapped again?' 'Dude, I suited up.' So that makes me feel like they're not only enjoying the show but actually watching it."

How I Met Your Mother debuted on CBS in 2005. It is a love story in reverse, showcasing the lead character's journey to finding his ultimate partner, as well as his relationship with his friends. Harris' Barney is the most obnoxious in the group, but his fun-loving personality is what makes him a likable character.

"What I love about Barney and what I think makes him acceptable is he's always kind of fun and having a good time," Neil Patrick Harris told Deseret Morning News. "He'll put Ted (Josh Radnor) into precarious situations. But then they're laughing about it.... And that's Barney's mentality. He likes to create crazy situations and then sit back and watch it all go down."

Moreover, Harris' Barney isn't totally heartless and anti-romantic, as evidenced by the time he kept stealing girls from Marshall (Jason Segel) so that his friend could get back together with his real love, Lily (Alyson Hannigan).

"It would be hard to have Barney be devilish and legitimately like a bad person,” he said.

How I Met Your Mother will return for its third season on Monday, September 24, though Harris, who is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, said he doesn't know much about how the stories will unfold this season.

"I'm in the dark as much as you guys are with what's happening show-wise. We get a script the day before the table read, and I get to read it and see what great hilarious stuff I get to say. What better job is there than that?,” he said.

After starring in a series of romantic comedy flicks, Mandy Moore graces the small screen with a guest appearance on the season premiere of How I Met Your Mother. On Monday, September 24, another “legendary” night unfolds as the 23-year-old singer-actress sheds her wholesome image as one of Ted Mosby's (Josh Radnor) girlfriends.

Described as “a love story in reverse,” How I Met Your Mother follows Ted in the year 2030 as he tells his son and daughter about the events that led to his meeting their mother, which started in 2005. Aside from Radnor, the principle cast includes Jason Segel (Marshall Eriksen), Cobie Smulders (Robin Scherbatsky), Neil Patrick Harris (Barney Stinson) and Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin).

In the third season of How I Met Your Mother, Moore will play a hard drinking, heavily tattooed bad girl whom Ted meets on his first night out of town.

Show executive producer Carter Bays gives ET some insight into Moore's character, Amy.

"Ted is freshly single and on the rebound, and on his first night out, he meets Amy, the ultimate bad decision," Bays revealed. "She's the tattooed, vodka-swilling trainwreck that Mandy Moore thankfully never turned into. We can't wait to see what Mandy does with it."

Meanwhile, Ted isn't the only one getting a new love interest for the upcoming season. Enrique Iglesias has signed on to play a love interest for Robin in at least two episodes. According to show executive producer Craig Thomas, the 32-year-old award-winning singer also appears in the premiere episode of the series.

"Enrique plays a dreamy vacation romance that Robin tries to transplant back into her real life - much to Ted's dismay," Thomas said. "The character, Gael, is exactly the guy you don't want your ex-girlfriend hooking up with next. In addition to being a sexy, guitar-playing surfer/massage therapist, the guy looks a like lot Enrique Iglesias. It drives Ted nuts."

It's the stuff Maxim subscribers' dreams are made of: ER's Busy Philipps has been cast on How I Met Your Mother as the hottie who may or may not end up in the sack with Ted... and his hit-and-run fling, Trudy (Danica McKellar, the Wonder Years cutie, thankfully all grown up).

As you may recall me telling you in a recent Ask Ausiello, in the Oct. 15 episode, Trudy is ready to go another round with Ted, but a new rival has already staked her claim on him — Trudy's old college frienemy, to be played by Philipps. So things could get heated in one of two ways: There could be name-calling and hair-pulling or clothes-ripping and sheets-tangling. (Either way, Ted's one lucky mother.)

Though Philipps is likely to fit right in with the How crowd, don't expect her to stick around beyond this pre-sweeps installment. Ted's pal Lily gives the sexpot the big thumbs-down after realizing that she's the shopper who ruined her shopping trip by walking off with a pair of coveted boots.

In retaliation to Robin starting to date, Ted goes on a date with a girl named Amy. Barney comes along as her friend's date, Melanie. Melanie keeps throwing herself at Barney, but he is too upset to notice because Ted spends the whole time getting drunk and making out with Amy in an attempt to win the breakup. Amy, who is also trying to win her break up with her ex-boyfriend Stiv, takes Ted to the tattoo parlor where Stiv works to make him jealous. Ted wakes up the next morning, alone, and unsure of what transpired the night before.

Season 3 will also have:

Question: I haven't seen much discussion of this, but it seems that How I Met Your Mother has evolved completely away from its original idea. At the start, it was presented as the story of a lovable klutz trying to find a wife in a singles milieu, and Neil Patrick Harris was scarcely mentioned. Now it's practically "The Neil Patrick Harris Show," and Ted was actually given a steady girlfriend for a season so they wouldn't have to talk about his search. Does that bother anybody?— Charles

Matt Roush: Didn't bother anybody I know. For one thing, there was a sense that the audience wanted to see Robin and Ted together, at least for a while, if only to understand why she later became "Aunt Robin" to the kids. Plus, I think it's fair to say that Mother has evolved rather successfully into an ensemble comedy, and it was probably wise not to ask Josh Radnor to actually carry the show. Finally, if you made it to the end of last season, you should know that the third season is going to revert back to Ted's romantic misadventures as a free agent, now that he and Robin are no longer a couple. So the premise of Ted finally meeting the kids' "mother" is getting closer to reality, it would appear.

The third season of How I Met Your Mother is scheduled to premiere in the fall, and creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are preparing to give fans a wider view of the show using the worldwide web.

During the show's session at the TCA summer press tour, Bays and Thomas announced that fans will be able to see racier versions of certain scenes by logging on to the show's website.

"It's going to be called 'How it Really Happened.' And you have to go online and search for it. It's going to be the story that the dad couldn't tell his kids,” Thomas explained. “When parents tell their kids a story, obviously some censorship and sanitizing happens. So you'll be able to see the real version of certain scenes all through season three, which we're really excited about.”

How I Met Your Mother is a comedy series that is told in reverse, with the central character, Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor), telling his children about how he came be with their mother. The series is, in this sense, made up of flashbacks that highlight significant moments in Ted's love life.

Although the series pilot indicated that Ted's friend, Robin (Cobie Smulders), is not the “Mother” in the show's title, she and Ted were involved for quite some time. However, in the second season finale, it was revealed that he and Robin had finally gone their separate ways. According to Bays, fans should not expect for the two characters to reconcile when the series continues.

“They've had their relationship. They tried it out. It didn't work. So now the future is wide open,” Bays said.

With that said, the How I Met Your Mother creators also let slip that starting with the season premiere, the show will be dropping more hints with regards to who the “Mother” in the title really is.
"Episode one will show that we have not forgotten the title of our show, in a very exciting way,” Thomas said.

Aside from the exciting new developments in Ted's love life, Bays also mentioned that Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), the newlywed couple whose stable relationship serves as a contrast to Ted's often chaotic search for his ultimate partner, will be buying a New York apartment and “making every mistake you can possibly make.” Moreover, Barney's (Neil Patrick Harris) gay brother will make another appearance in the upcoming season of How I Met Your Mother, and his presence "will figure actually into the story of Barney's first love, the woman he lost his virginity to."

Robin starts dating a guy she met in Brazil, Gael, who paints seashells by the seashore. He is also a surfer, sculptor, flamenco guitarist, chef, and massage therapist. They double date with Lily and Marshall, who try not to like him for Ted's sake--who is not taking the news well--but Gael draws them into his weird world.

Said Carter [Bay], "In the first episode, Barney is sitting at his computer, just there at work, or whatever. And he gets a phone call from Marshall, who's like, 'Hey, check your email.' So, Barney opens up his email from Marshall and there's a link to a Website. It's slapcountdown.com. And it's going to literally be a ticking clock... to when the slap will occur."

The season premiere will focus on the aftermath of Ted and Robin's breakup. Also, a major hint will be dropped about the Mother. Teases [exec producer Carter] Bay: "Episode one will show that we haven't forgotten the title of our show in a very big way." Also in the premiere, Marshall will give Barney a rather large clue about when his highly-anticipated third slap will be delivered. (Hint: It involves a website called slapcountdown.com.)

Taking a cue from their own personal lives, as they often do, Carter [Bay] and Craig [Thomas] bought homes this past year, and some of that pain will spill over into the show: "One of the sort of general arcs of the season is Marshall and Lily dealing with their housing situation. We want to do the story of Marshall and Lily buying an apartment in New York and making every mistake you can possibly make. We're also going to deal with Marshall's career. He just graduated from law school. He wants to be an environmental lawyer. He's going to find out that when you have $100,000 in law school debt, that's maybe not the best financial decision."

Exec producer Craig] Thomas hints that this season we'll meet the woman that stole Barney's virginity. And she sounds frightening. There'll be lots of drama (and comedy) when Marshall and Lily purchase their first New York apartment. Marshall's work issues will also take center stage when he realizes that environmental law may not be the most lucrative career path. Wayne Brady will reprise his role as Barney's gay bro in a flashback episode that shows him "before he was gay... and very macho and over-compensating."

Executive producer Craig Thomas says we're going to meet Rhonda, the 45-year-old pal of Barney's mom, to whom Barney lost his virginity. "She smells like menthol cigarettes," previews Thomas. "We're going to see that story and what it does to Barney in the present day."

There'll be more clues about the mother on HIMYM [this season].

We hear the network is asking focus groups if they would prefer to see Ted and Robin dating or just being friends for next season.
